A Fool Repeats His Folly

Hey lovelies, happy Wednesday! How have you been holding up this week? Let me know in the comments. Welcome back to our Wednesday Bible study. Today’s study is simply one verse with a whole lot of substance. I’m really excited to dive into this verse because it hits home for me, and I could safely assume it may hit home for you as well. Get that journal out and let’s take some notes! Today’s verse is: Proverbs 26:11, and I am reading from the NKJV version.

                                                                      Scripture

Proverbs 26:11 NKJV:  As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

                                                                    Lets Explore

This very verse was one that I kept close to my heart while enduring heartbreak (may share in a later blog post). Admit it, it’s easy to fall back into old patterns for a plethora of reasons: comfortability, fear, difficulty in seeing our worth and value, etc. Sometimes we even seek others to validate our folly; I know have! Isn’t that ridiculous? We’d rather have someone justify our sins as oppose to seeking the One to redirect us away from them. Have you seen a dog eat its own vomit? How did you feel observing the dog doing so? Although it is the dog’s nature, it does not change the fact that it is disgusting. Similarly, we have to take on the same feelings towards our own sins. It may be human nature to sin, but it does not change the fact that sin drives a wedge between our relationship with God. Though we are living in the flesh, we have to operate in the Spirit. Fortunately for us, we serve a sovereign God. He does not get “disgusted” with us, but because He hates the sin, we grieve the Holy Spirit of God when we commit them. There’s an old saying with several variations that goes “If you knew better, you’d do better.” It’s simple, decide in your heart today, to no longer be a fool repeating the same folly. Let’s not take His grace for granted. These follies may offer a temporary and artificial pleasure, but it is just that: temporary and artificial. When it’s all said it done how do you feel on the inside? God loves us, and He desires so much more for us. Let’s stop selling ourselves short, let’s not distract ourselves with our own pleasures. Do not let condemnation get the best of you and hold you captive. That is not of God, and YOU ARE NOT TOO FAR GONE. Cling onto God and His promises. Your identity is NOT rooted in your folly, it is rooted in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection

  • Based on today’s study, what are the follies [sins] in your life that you keep repeating? Write it down, and write down the ways you will combat against falling into those same old patterns.
  • Why do you believe you repeat these follies? Take time to allow the Holy Spirit to place the reasons in your heart. It’s important to get to the root of our struggles so we can uproot them and so that it becomes less desirable for us to commit.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we thank you for this Proverb. Thank you for placing in our hearts the sins we need to remove from our lives. We thank you for grace and mercy upon our souls. Lord we ask for protection over the attacks from the enemy that causes us to repeat the same ole folly. Equip us with the Armor of God, send warring angels on our behalf. Help us to no longer commit these sins as we don’t have the strength to do it on our own. Lord we need you, We love You, Your are a Good Good Father! Thank you for choosing us and allowing us to come to You. Remind us of our worth and value Lord God. Remind us that we are capable of overcoming anything no matter how big or small it is. We thank you for EVERYTHING Lord.

In Jesus Name, we pray Amen.

With Love,

Allison
